Guru

Guru are a new cloud hosting company offering flexible solutions that are easy to understand. This project was a blank canvas so we could have some real fun with it. I teamed up with Naomi Atkinson who handled the design work and brought that Guru character, "Beep", to life. There are some really nice responsive elements on this site, such as switching from a slider interface to a tabbed interface on the Managed by Guru page at smaller resolutions. Check it out!

Naomi Atkinson Design

Working with one great designer is a pleasure, but working with two, that’s a real treat. I’ve been collaborating with Naomi Atkinson to bring her beautifully minimalistic design to life. I think we’re all most proud of the team section, Dan Rubin worked his magic with the camera and I added a hybrid of CSS3 transition effects and jQuery to help visitors get to know the people they’d be working with at Naomi Atkinson Design. Definitely one of my favourite projects to date!

Cambridge Pianoforte

Cambridge Pianoforte have been agents of Steinway & Sons, the prestigious piano makers, for over 25 years providing a range of services from hire and removal through to complete restorations and tuning. They wanted the redesign of their website to convey the quality of their products and services while providing information about in-store events and special offers maintainable through a content management system.

Get Signoff v2

Get Signoff v2

As part of my work at Headscape I was tasked with designing the user interface of Get Signoff v2, a web application created to help design teams communicate with their clients, screenshots and videos of which can been seen here. Unfortunately, due to financial constraints and overheads, the launch of version 2 had to be cancelled and the application has been acquired by Design Signoff.

What I do

Design

Design is more than pretty graphics. The aesthetics of your site are important but it's only part of a greater whole. When I design a website, I'm also concerned with: accessibility - your site should be available to as many people as possible, usability - if your site is difficult to figure out, people will go elsewhere, responsiveness - by the end of 2013, more people will be browsing the web on mobile devices than desktop computers*, websites aren't confined to a single device anymore and need to adapt accordingly, your message - what is the focus of your site? If the core message isn't conveyed, the design doesn't matter.

Development

I specialise in front-end development: HTML, CSS and JavaScript. I write clean, semantic, standards-based markup that's optimised to give the sites I build as great a response time as possible.

I also offer content management integration so you can maintain your site easily. I have extensive experience with systems such as Wordpress and ExpressionEngine and am skilled in the use of PHP to ensure these systems can be moulded to your sites unique needs.

A bit about me

Hello. My name is Ryan Taylor and I'm a freelance web designer, front-end developer and writer living near Leeds, West Yorkshire in the UK with my beautiful wife Michelle and son Jack.

Prior to going full time freelance I worked for the highly respected agency Headscape, firstly as a product evangelist and designer for their web app Get Signoff* and then as a designer on their design team.

My relationship with the company grew from my time spent as the producer of Boagworld, the award winning web design podcast where I not only had the pleasure of occasionally hosting the show but also attending numerous conferences and interviewing industry professionals.

I took these interviews further with my own podcast, Please start from the beginning... where we take a step back in time to discuss their career paths, experiences and the choices that lead them to doing what they currently do.

I'm a regular contributor to .net magazine writing their monthly CMS gallery column as well as several

tutorials and features.

I've also had the honour of being a judge for their annual .net Awards since 2010.

In another life I was an IT Technician (back when fixing computers meant warming up a soldering iron) and worked in both the private sector and education (including Wakefield College and the University of Leeds) for about 7 years.

I'd always had a creative itch that never quite got scratched prior to building my first website in 2004.

I'd spent a lot of time trying to find the right outlet, dabbling in 3D animation, music and creative writing but none gave me the same buzz as immersing myself in the endless possibilities of the web and I have as much enthusiasm for it now as I ever had.

* sadly due to financial constraints and overheads this app has now closed down.
